One business owner turned down a week in Hermanus in December. A friend offered him a house, cash only, and he didn’t have the cash available. On paper, his business is worth somewhere north of eleven million rand.

It’s a strange gap to sit with. The number on a balance sheet and the number that’s actually usable day to day aren’t always the same thing, and for a lot of business owners, that gap is wider than they’d expect.

For most people, wealth builds up in a way that’s at least somewhat liquid. A salary becomes a bond payment becomes a retirement annuity becomes, eventually, a pension. For business owners, a large share of that wealth often sits in the business itself, in stock, equipment, or debtors who pay on their own timeline. It’s entirely possible to be wealthy on paper and still feel stretched covering an unexpected bill, simply because the value isn’t sitting anywhere accessible.

There’s also a question that tends to get put off longer than it probably should: who takes over the business when the owner steps back. Some owners hope a child will take it on, without having had that conversation properly. Others assume a buyer will come along when the time is right, the way there always seems to be a buyer for a house. Many simply haven’t had the space to think about it yet, because the business tends to take up whatever attention is available for today, not fifteen years from now.

There’s often something harder to quantify sitting underneath all of this too. For many owners, the business isn’t just an asset on a spreadsheet. It’s years of early mornings, decisions made on the fly, an answer to “so what do you do.” Thinking about selling it, or handing it on, can bring up more than financial questions.

For a business owner, the retirement plan and the succession plan tend to be closely connected, even when nobody’s sat down to write either one out yet.
